Do you actually like working with Google Analytics 4? In my work with nonprofit orgs with small comms teams the answer is almost always an emphatic NO. (And before you read further, this isn't just a complaining post. I have a positive suggestion 🙂) I understand why Google Analytics is running on so many nonprofit webstes. orgs install GA because it's free and it's the standard — even though so many teams struggle to get actionable data from it. And "free" comes with a cost. GA is free because Google processes your data. That means a cookie consent banner. (Or it should.) And once consent is set up correctly, you're probably going to lose 30-50% of your website traffic data as users decline marketing cookie consent. My favorite alternative after 18 months of testing alternatives: Fathom Analytics. It's simple, affordable, cookieless (no consent banner needed), and the dashboard is genuinely easy to read at a glance. I've started rolling Fathom Analytics into my support plan for nonprofit WordPress website clients, meaning their website comes with a single-screen analytics report right there in the dashboard. What you get: → Visitors, pageviews, time on site, bounce rate, events → Referring sites, traffic sources, campaigns → Devices, browsers, geography → Google Search Console data built in → One-line install, works with any platform → Click any line to immediately filter the whole report I shared more detail about Fathom Analytics in this week's Digital Landscape email which I'll link to in the comments. Take a read. Check out this GA alternative and try running it on your site. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

The internet is completely changing. Bot traffic to many of our customers, which we block from their data, is exceeding human traffic. We're deploying more bot protection this week (which will be epic) but it's clear that there's useful data in this bot traffic. Watch this space.
