Description

Call sites across the codebase are written in the stdlib-logging style:

logger.warning("fell back to %s because %s", choice, reason)

but Logger.log space-joins its arguments, so those lines print the format string literally with the values appended -- mangling exactly the log lines someone reads while debugging the situation the line describes.

This PR formats the message with the stdlib rules when the first argument is a string carrying %-conversion specifiers:

  • a lone Mapping argument feeds %(name)s fields;
  • otherwise the argument tuple applies;
  • arguments that do not match the specifiers (too few/too many, wrong types) fall back to the historical space-join instead of raising from inside a log call;
  • escaped %% is not treated as a specifier;
  • plain multi-argument joins (logger.error("loaded", 3, "shards")) are unchanged.

Adjacent to (but disjoint from) #18756, which touches the same file.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/others/test_logger_percent_format.py (new, CPU-only): percent-style call sites, numeric/precision specifiers, mapping arguments, plain joins unchanged, no-argument format strings untouched, escaped percent, mismatched-argument fallback (never raises), non-string first argument, and direct _percent_format shape cases.

PR Checklist

  • PR description clearly explains what and why.
  • PR follows TRT-LLM CODING GUIDELINES to the best of your knowledge.
  • Test cases are provided for new code paths.
  • No new dependencies.
  • Documentation not needed (internal logging behavior fix).

Dev Engineer Review

Logger.log now supports positional and mapping-based % formatting, numeric and precision specifiers, escaped %%, and length modifiers. Incompatible arguments use the historical space-joined fallback instead of raising. Review finding counts are unavailable from the supplied evidence.

QA Engineer Review

Added tests/unittest/others/test_logger_percent_format.py with coverage for formatting, mappings, numeric and precision specifiers, escaped percents, length modifiers, non-string inputs, and fallback behavior. Added a waiver in tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt for test_nemotron_h_breakable_prefill_cuda_graph[tp1] due to the pre-existing bug 6777501 failure. The new unit test is not listed in the CI or manual-QA lists. Coverage is sufficient.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/logger.py: Verify positional and mapping substitutions, escaped %%, length modifiers, and fallback joins without exceptions.
  • tests/unittest/others/test_logger_percent_format.py: Covers formatting and fallback paths. It is not registered in the CI or manual-QA lists.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt: Waives test_nemotron_h_breakable_prefill_cuda_graph[tp1] for bug 6777501. Remove the waiver after the fix reaches main.

Call sites across the codebase are written in the stdlib-logging style
logger.warning("fell back to %s", choice), but Logger.log space-joined
its arguments, printing the format string literally with the argument
appended. Format the message with the stdlib rules when the first
argument carries %-specifiers: a lone Mapping feeds %(name)s fields,
otherwise the argument tuple applies. Arguments that do not match the
specifiers fall back to the historical join instead of raising from
inside a log call.

Walkthrough

Logger.log now supports printf-style positional and mapping formats. It falls back to space-joined output when formatting does not apply or fails. CPU-only tests cover formatting and fallback cases. An integration test waiver is also added.

Changes

Logger Percent Formatting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Percent formatting and logger integration
tensorrt_llm/logger.py
The logger detects supported percent conversions, formats positional and mapping arguments, and retains space-joined output for incompatible arguments.
Formatting behavior tests
tests/unittest/others/test_logger_percent_format.py
CPU-only tests validate numeric, precision, mapping, escaped-percent, mixed, non-formatting, and fallback behavior, including %ld handling.

Integration Test Waiver

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nemotron H test waiver
tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt
The waiver list skips the tp1 breakable-prefill CUDA graph test and references bug 6777501.

Note on the test waive in this PR

CI here is blocked by a pre-existing failure on main that is unrelated to this change (unrelated failure (unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_nemotron_h.py::test_nemotron_h_breakable_prefill_cuda_graph[tp1]) unaddressed on main for 13h (merge-base age)):

  • unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_nemotron_h.py::test_nemotron_h_breakable_prefill_cuda_graph[tp1] — tracked in https://nvbugs/6777501

The test(s) are waived in this PR so its CI can proceed. Once main carries the waive, the line here becomes redundant and is dropped automatically (on the next rebase at the latest).

Cover unsupported percent conversions in the emitted-record path. Logger._percent_format returns None for %q, so Logger.log must emit the historical space-joined value. No current emitted-record test exercises this path, so a regression can pass unnoticed.
