*From across Europe to the heart of the EU* This week, ECPAT members from Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia were in Brussels for the ECPAT and ECLAG Week of Action. They met Members of the European Parliament and national government representatives with the same request: to pass a strong EU’s Child Sexual Abuse Regulation (CSAR), the law that will shape how online platforms detect, report and remove child sexual abuse material in the European Union. As part of the ECLAG #ChooseToSeeThem campaign, our message to decision-makers is simple: choose to see the children behind the policy. Put their needs, experiences and rights first. An international network of NGOs working to end the sexual exploitation of children.
About us
ECPAT is a growing network of over 124 civil society organizations in over 104 countries working to end the sexual exploitation of children through prostitution; taking action against travelling child sex offenders and tourists; preventing the trafficking of children for sexual purposes; stopping early and forced child marriage, and eliminating the online sexual exploitation of children. We are working to research and better understand this heinous crime; tackle the online sexual exploitation of children; end the trafficking of children for sexual purposes; wind-up the forced and early marriage of children; and bring a halt to the sexual exploitation of children through the travel and tourism industry. We advocate for a stronger legal environment to protect children; raise awareness among the public about the problem, and help survivors and victims to come to terms with what has happened to them – and better understand their rights.

What does it mean to put children back into focus? Today, around 80 persons including ECLAG members, partners and key stakeholders came together in Brussels to discuss one of Europe's most urgent child protection challenges: how we can strengthen our response to child sexual abuse and exploitation online. The debate around the EU's future framework is often framed around technology, privacy or surveillance. But there is a question we must not lose sight of: what happens to children when our systems fail to detect abuse, identify victims and prevent further harm? Child sexual abuse does not stop at national borders. Nor does the technology used by perpetrators. Europe therefore needs a strong, permanent framework that: → puts child safety by design at the heart of online services; → addresses all forms of online child sexual abuse, including CSAM and grooming; → enables effective action across the online spaces where children are present; → provides strong safeguards for fundamental rights. #ChooseToSeeThem #OnlineSafety A wholehearted thanks to our speakers, Magnus Brunner, Sandra Spitaels, Antonio Labrador Jimenez, MEP Heléne Fritzon, Katarzyna Staciwa, Nel Broothaerts, Mick Moran, Lea Peters, Julie Guichard and MEP Jeroen Lenaers.

It's easy to assume that child sexual exploitation happens elsewhere—in another country or a different kind of business. The reality: wherever travel and tourism businesses operate, children are in contact with those services, and so are the risks. 400 companies have already started integrating preventive and protection measures into their operations and supply chains by becoming members of The Code - Tourism Child-Protection Code of Conduct. The debate on child sexual abuse online in the EU too often turns into a debate on technology, encryption, privacy and politics. All of these matter. But where are children’s rights in all of this? The message of ECLAG’s new campaign is clear: Choose to see them. Focus on the children. During ECPAT’s annual Week of Action in Brussels, our flagship advocacy initiative at the heart of the EU institutions, ECPAT International stands with our fellow ECLAG coalition members in calling on European policymakers to put children’s rights, safety and dignity at the centre of efforts to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation online. Because decisions made in Europe matter for children far beyond its borders. Children experiences and rights must never be lost in the debate about their own protection. #ChooseToSeeThem #FocusOnTheChildren #ProtectChildrenOnline
The debate about how we respond to child sexual abuse has become so focused on technology, privacy, legislation and politics 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭. Every case of child sexual abuse involves a child whose rights, safety and dignity have been violated. Today, we are launching a movement to asking policymakers to do something simple: 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻. Europe needs an ambitious and permanent framework to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation online. Because children should never disappear from the policy debate. #ChooseToSeeThem #FocusontheChildren #ProtectChildrenOnline

This #WorldTourismDay, we have a question: does your business have a plan to protect children in person and online? Digital interactions are embedded within children’s everyday social worlds and do not occur in isolation. According to #DisruptingHarm research, children who were subjected to in-person sexual violence had up to 6.7x greater odds of being subjected to technology-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse compared with children who had not. You don't need to be an expert to start. The Code - Tourism Child-Protection Code of Conduct is a global initiative that helps travel and tourism companies put practical child protection measures in place, both in-person and online. 👉 Start here: https://thecode.org/join/

European institutions are negotiating how online platforms should prevent and respond to child sexual abuse material. The technology to stop this abuse already exists, and what the EU decides could echo far beyond Europe. ECPAT International stands with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) in calling for a strong EU Child Sexual Abuse Regulation (CSAR). 🌍 Live in the EU? Use the IWF platform to contact your representatives in Brussels and tell them children can't wait. Live elsewhere? Share this to help spread the word. 👇 #CSAR #EndCSAM
Today, the technology exists to Prevent - Detect - Report - Remove child sexual abuse content online. Who would hesitate? Europe is deciding how effectively criminal child sexual abuse content can be prevented from spreading online. Your representatives are making that decision in your name. We're calling on the European Parliament and the Council to back a robust framework, one that gives providers a clear legal duty to find, report and remove child sexual abuse material online, with clear limits, proper checks and independent oversight built in from the start. And you can do it too. Contact your representatives in Brussels to demand support for a comprehensive and permanent legal framework in two simple steps. Share with your networks. Let's make our voices heard! https://lnkd.in/eAzDAn_H
