Supporting education starts with supporting people. This summer, the Vernier team took on a wellness challenge together, and one of the highlights was a hike out to the Vernier condo. Getting outside together is one of the ways we live out our commitment to taking care of our people and our environment. Vernier has been mission-driven since Dave Vernier founded the company in his garage in 1981, and that mission extends to how we show up for each other, not just for the educators and students we serve. What if employability skills weren't treated as a high school initiative—but as something students develop throughout their entire K–12 experience? That's one of the biggest takeaways from new research by Marzano Research, conducted for the U.S. Department of Education. After reviewing more than 22,000 resources, the researchers found that skills like communication, adaptability, technology fluency, and problem-solving aren't "nice to have"—they're essential outcomes that should be intentionally developed across grade levels and subject areas. As Trudy Cherasaro of Marzano Research put it, “We can’t treat employability skills as an add‑on. They must really be intentionally developed throughout the education experience and connected to real‑world context.” Carolina Cano, Assistant Director of CTE for Portland Public Schools, also added: "[Employability skills] shouldn't just be a CTE thing. It shouldn't be siloed. It should be across all content, and as early as pre-K." In a recent webinar, David Yanoski of Marzano Research joined district leaders from Houston ISD, West Ada School District, and Portland Public Schools to explore what this looks like in practice.
