Dirichlet Kernel

The Dirichlet kernel for Fourier series is the finite sum

D_n(x)=sum_(k=-n)^(n)e^(ikx)=1+2sum_(k=1)^(n)cos(kx)
(1)
=(sin[(n+1/2)x])/(sin(1/2x)),
(2)

where n is a nonnegative integer and values at x=2pim, with m an integer, are defined by continuity as D_n(2pim)=2n+1. The normalized kernel D_n(x)/(2pi) has unit integral over -pi<x<pi and converges to the delta function there in the sense of generalized functions. On the entire real line, its limit is the periodic impulse train sum_(k=-infty)^(infty)delta(x-2pik), a rescaled Shah function.

For the Fourier transform in n dimensions, define the normalized Dirichlet kernel

 D_n^M(x)=1/((2pi)^n)int_(|xi|<=M)e^(i<xi,x>)dxi,
(3)

where M>0 and n is a positive integer. This is a radial function of r=|x|. For n>=3 and r>0, it satisfies

 D_n^M(r)=-1/(2pir)d/(dr)D_(n-2)^M(r),
(4)

with its value at r=0 defined by continuity.
