Guidelines & Best Practices for Mentors & Mentees

DO

• As a mentor, motivate the mentee to identify their own issues and goals and help them to find ways of resolving or reaching them – not by doing it for them, or expecting them to ‘do it the way I did it’, but by understanding and respecting different ways of working
• Be the bridge to connect the mentee with other professionals that would provide personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunities
• Approach each mentor-mentee differently. Take this opportunity to develop long term relationships

DON'T

• Mentors do not provide counseling or therapy
• Mentors are not expected to provide career advice. Mentors share their own perspectives and experiences, which can help mentees decide what next steps make sense for them.
